The Gulf of Mexico oil spill is past the 90 day mark, and this is a horrific thing for those in the Gulf of Mexico. Beaches in Florida are open, according to the State of Florida’s July 20, 2010 updates.
The black goo threatened the livelihoods of many in the Florida Panhandle, as oil slicks, sheens, and tar balls threatened white Sugar Sand beaches.
In Florida, the health departments will close down any beaches if there is a danger to public health. This is usually indicated through the presence of oil mousse or sheen. This substance can be toxic to humans.
In addition to the update on the Florida beaches, the oil spill is still 100% contained at this point. Experts are monitoring the situation to see if the oil cap will need to be lifted from the well so that pressure can be released. There are lower than expected pressure readings, which indicate that there could be a leak; however, at this time none have been confirmed and BP can keep the cap in place for the next 24 hours.
The spill continues to be on the forefront of many minds. There is visible improvement on the water’s surface, indicating that there could be hope of cleaning up the mess. The effects will, however, be evident for many years to come.
