Oil Spill In China: Avoiding International Waters Necessary

China has experienced an oil spill unprecedented in their region.  The country is working hard to ensure that the slick stays out of international waters to avoid international scrutiny.  The leak was caused by a pipeline explosion, which sparked a fire.  So far an area of 70 miles has been affected.

This goes to show you that it’s not only the US that is dealing with the affects of an oil spill.  In the Gulf of Mexico, oil leaked from the Deepwater Horizon site for over eighty days before a containment cap was placed on.  So far, the leak has stopped but if pressure readings stay unfavorable, the government could require BP to lift the cap – starting the spill again.

The Chinese oil spill is in the Yellow Sea, off a busy northeastern port. Some of the photos that were taken around the area affected were more gruesome than those from the Gulf.  A photo of a man up to his cheekbones in sludge as well as a photo of workers carrying away an oil-covered colleague were all taken before officials had a chance to shoo away the photographers.

All of these recent events will likely lead to increased environmental awareness.  Alternative sources of fuel should be discovered so that we don’t have tragedies like this occur.
