Another Breeders Cup 2010 Results: Dirt Mile (Dakota Phone); Turf (Dangerous Midge) A 37-1 outs
ider in the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile, Dakota Phone came from last to circle the field and be just up at the wire, nosing out Morning Line. He paid $77.40.
Owned by Halo Farms and trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, Dakota Phone won for just the second time in 2010. He lagged in the early stages behind a brisk pace battle between Vineyard Haven, Morning Line and Hurricane Ike.
“I just wanted to be clear (of other runners),” Dakota Phone’s jockey, Joel Rosario, said. He also said he tried to stay off the rail, which he thought was playing a little slow.
Dakota Phone made the widest bid of a wall of horses making late runs at the frontrunners. His was stoutest, and he just got his nose down at the wire ahead of Morning Line.
“He wants to come off the pace,” Hollendorfer said. “The reason we opted for this race is because we thought we’d get a good pace (to run at).”
Final time for the race was 1:35.29. California invader Gayego got third. He ran fourth in last year’s Sprint.
* Dirt Mile contender Crown of Thorns, second in the Sprint last year, was scratched earlier in the week.
* 2009 Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird finished 10th in the Dirt Mile. His owners said before the race that if he didn’t hit the board Saturday, he would be retired and sent to a farm in New Mexico. Mine That Bird hadn’t won since the Derby, 18 months ago.

Turf: Dangerous Midge finds another gear
Dangerous Midge — the other European — tracked pacesetter Champ Pegasus for a mile and a quarter before finding another gear and scooting past that rival to win the $3 million Breeders’ Cup Turf at Churchill Downs Saturday.
The 4-year-old son of Lion Heart sat second through the first 10 furlongs of the race, and then re-rallied on the outside of Champ Pegasus, powering to a widening score.
Favorite Behkabad, the top European horse in the field, could do now better than third.
Dangerous Midge, ridden by Frankie Dettori, cover the 1 1/2 miles in 2:29.40, paying $19 to win.
*Prix De L’Arc De Triomphe winner Workforce was scratched earlier in the day due to the turf course being too hard, his connections said.
