By Jeff Wong on Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011

President Obama and the left have heated up controversy again, calling the Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional.  Thismeans that the Administration would like to re-write the constitution essentially to include a "non-discrimination clause" dealing with sexual orientation. Maggie Gallagher, an opponent of gay rights says that the move by Obama is "We’re seeing a pattern to how Democrats respond to election losses: do an end-run around democracy. You can’t block a union bill? Flee the chambers. You can’t repeal DOMA? Declare orientation a protected class all on your own. This tactic ...

Wisconsin Teachers Strike is an Insult to the Unemployed

By Samantha Ryan on Friday, February 18th, 2011

I know several unemployed individuals who would do anything to get a job that brought them a paycheck.  In times of desperation, shoveling elephant poo at the zoo sounds like a job with a corner office.  Imagine how insulted millions of unemployed workers, mainly thousands of educators, were when they saw what is unfolding out in Wisconsin. In a nutshell, Wisconsin teachers are outraged that the state may limit the collective bargaining agreement with the teachers' union. Thousands of teachers called in sick in many areas across the state, causing several ...

The 2012 election is right around the corner, and already the wars against Fox News and other right winged media sources are heating up.  Fox News has been ousted for using prior year CPAC coverage to skew Ron Paul's straw poll win over Mitt Romney.  The clip shown showcases Mitt Romney supporters booing at the result, which is what various online publications such as InfoWars claims is only the latest in "establishment media's" so-called campaign against Paul. In 2010, Congressman Paul also beat out the popular governor of Massachusetts - and ...

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has named a longtime ally to head her political action committee. Longtime political strategist Michael Glassner signed on as chief of staff of Palin’s PAC, a post he held during her 2008 vice-presidential bid. The move Saturday, which was first reported by the Associated Press, indicates that Palin is getting serious about challenging for the presidency in 2012. Palin has said that she is considering a 2012 bid but hasn’t declared her candidacy yet. If she were to enter the Republican field, she would be joining former ...

Jobs picture only gets cloudier with latest Labor Department report

By Gary Phillips on Thursday, February 10th, 2011

The Labor Department reported last week that the U.S. unemployment rate dropped sharply in January but provided few figures to support their numbers. The government said the unemployment rate in America fell from 9.4 percent to 9.0 – its second straight 0.4 percent drop – even as U.S. businesses failed to create enough jobs last month to keep pace with the number of new workers entering the job market. Only 36,000 jobs were created in January, well under the roughly 100,000 needed to absorb new entrants to the labor pool and merely ...

Winter storms sock the East

A broad storm cutting a swath from Tennessee to New England is wreaking havoc in a region that has been pummeled by one of the snowiest winters in recent memory. Commuters in New York, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., were stuck in rush-hour traffic Wednesday as the cities braced for upwards of a foot of snow from the latest storm. Since mid-December, heavy snow has fallen in New York City eight times. The Big Apple already has withstood 36 inches of snow this winter, almost double its average amount. It was hardest ...

Obama delivers State of the Union address

By Gary Phillips on Tuesday, January 25th, 2011

President Obama delivered the annual State of the Union address Tuesday night, calling for a 5-year freeze on discretionaryspending while targeting investment in science, education and infrastructure. Republicans generally applauded the president’s shift to the political center, but questioned whether the call for more investment was just another spending increase in disguise. But during the address, at least, Democrats and Republicans stood – and sat -- together. In the wake of the Jan. 8 assassination attempt on Rep Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz., lawmakers crossed the aisle Tuesday night in a ...

Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, who was shot in the head while meeting with constituents in Tucson, Ariz., last Saturday, continued to make strides in her recovery late this week. Giffords was critically wounded by a lone assailant, believed to be 22-year-old Jared Loughner, while she discussed issues with people outside a Safeway grocery store Jan. 8. Six others – including a 9-year-old girl and a U.S. district court judge – were killed. More than a dozen others were wounded. During the past week, Giffords passed significant cognitive milestones, doctors said.  In the days ...

Unemployment rates plunges, but numbers are fuzzy

By Gary Phillips on Friday, January 7th, 2011

The nation’s unemployment rate dropped sharply in December, but the number of jobs added by companies disappointed mostanalysts. The Department of Labor reported a decline in the jobless rate last month from 9.8 percent to 9.4 percent. But that figure is misleading. The private sector added about 113,000 jobs last month, the Labor Department report showed. But that figure was below economists’ predictions of 150,000 and barely enough to cover the number of new job seekers entering the labor pool. “The economic recovery that began a year and a half ago is ...
