By Samantha Ryan on Thursday, January 6th, 2011

Ted Williams has a golden voice, and it's a voice that pulled him out of the depths of Skid Row and into a million dollar contract. A former radio announcer struggled with homelessness and addiction only to emerge as this year's first Cinderella story - a viral internet phenomenon turned radio star. This is a great way to start out 2011.  After all, the country is overwhelmed with hopelessness from the millions of unemployed workers who can't seem to find their dream job. And it pulls at all of our heartstrings. We ...

The 112th Congress convened Wednesday, marking a change in leadership in the House of Representatives and signaling achange in how business will be done in the people’s chamber. “I now pass this gavel, and the sacred trust that goes with it, to the new Speaker,” outgoing Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi said, as she handed the oversized mallet to Ohio Republican John Boehner. Boehner was swept into the top legislative post in Congress after the midterm elections in November, when Republicans trounced Democrats and regained control of the House. The ...

George Lucas should be proud.  Joining his epic film "Star Wars" in the National Film Registry is perhaps one of the most well-known sequels ever to be made.  In addition, his films American Graffiti and Electronic Labyrinth: THX 1138 4EB are in the registry as well. He's obviously one of the most well-known American filmmakers. Below is a list of the films inducted into the National Film Registry: Airplane! (1980) All the President’s Men (1976) The Bargain (1914) Cry of Jazz (1959) Electronic Labyrinth: THX 1138 4EB (1967)...

Obama Signs Unemployment Extension & Tax Bill

By Jeff Wong on Friday, December 17th, 2010

President Obama signed a sweeping piece of legislation Friday that will extend both the current tax format and benefits for thelong-term unemployed. “As a whole, this package will grow our economy, create jobs, and help middle-class families across the country,” Obama said moments before he signed the bill. The new law keeps in place the so-called Bush tax cuts, which were enacted in 2001 and 2003. The president, who had long denounced the extension as favoring high-income earners, reached a compromise with Republican congressional leaders last week. In return ...

Stock Market Update: Economy positives help move market higher

By Gary Phillips on Thursday, December 16th, 2010

Separate economic reports encouraged traders on Thursday, moving all three major U.S. stocks indexes higher. The Labor Department reported a slight drop in the number of jobless claims last week, continuing a trend that many view as a positive for the broader economy. The four-week average of jobless claims came in at 425,000, a level that employment experts say signals shallow job growth. That figure clashes with last week’s Labor Department report that showed sluggish private-sector job expansion. Just 39,000 such jobs were created last month, a dismal number that ...

You might think that of all cities, Minneapolis has to be the best equipped to handle a blizzard. This time the blizzard handled Minneapolis. Make that manhandled. The most graphic evidence of the storm’s effects came from a video taken inside the Metrodome, the home of the NFL’s Minnesota Vikings. The storm dumped more than 17 inches of snow on the city from Friday into Saturday evening. Snow accumulated on the stadium’s Teflon roof, eventually collapsing the structure in at least two places. As a result, the Vikings game scheduled ...

[VIDEO] Dumb and Dumber Diarrhea Scene Airs on CNN

By Ryan Davidson on Friday, December 10th, 2010

It's an epic fail. Dumb and Dumber's Diarrhea scene aired on a CNN broadcast.  IT's really quite strange - the news station was discussing the tuition hike in London, then all of a sudden, the tape zooms to the Dumb and Dumber scene where Jeff Daniels' character has a bad case of the runs. After, Ali Velshi asked "we didn't just put that on air, did we? Good thing it's a taped show we can edit it out." Well, it wasn't edited out. Perhaps it's amusing.  Perhaps it shows truly what the students ...

Extension of Bush-era tax cuts voted down

By Gary Phillips on Monday, December 6th, 2010

In a largely symbolic vote to appease their political base, senators on Saturday blocked a plan to extend the so-called Bush era tax cuts to all but the wealthiest taxpayers. Republicans and a handful of Democrats thwarted the measure, which would have kept tax rates at their current levels for all taxpayers making less than $250,000 per year. GOP senators decried the proposal as being the wrong thing to do during a recession. President Obama, who had long espoused letting the cuts expire at the end of the year, seems to have ...

The American Dream Didn’t Include Bed Bugs, Part II: The Consequences

Since 1962 when Rachel Carson’s book Silent Spring came out the world of pest control and pesticides have been turned upside down. As the years went by people seemed to believe that living a pest free life was a right; it was all part of the American Dream and pesticides had nothing to do with it. Instead of society believing that pesticides are life savers, society has come to believe that pesticides are doing all sort of terrible and unknown things. That in spite of the fact that people are ...

Retailers have bleak outlook amid beginning of holiday shopping season

The Black Friday numbers are in, and for retailers, they’re not good. Shopper Trak, a firm that follows retail traffic, said sales on retailers’ busiest day grew at an anemic 0.3 percent over last year. The number of bargain-hunters who went to stores on Black Friday increased by 2.2 percent over 2009 figures. Experts said the sluggish sales at brick-and-mortar stores stemmed from shallow discounts offered by retailers. “Price is still a big determinant of the purchase,” Telsey Advisory Group analyst Joseph Feldman told Reuters news service. “People obviously want to buy items, ...
