Memphis Grizzlies Beat Chicago Bulls on Historic Civil Rights Holiday
Memphis had more than one reason to celebrate on Martin Luther King Jr Day.  The Grizzlies were able to defeat visiting Chicago Bulls 102-86. Some 20 years ago, when kids wanted to "Be Like Mike" the headline would have been huge. Sort of like the Grizzlies beating the Lakers in modern day. Of course, nothing is surprising in the wake of the lockout.  Kris Humphries, who last season was basically unheard of, has suddenly landed an $8m contract after his popularity exploded in the wake of his whirlwind ...

Tiger Woods eliminated in first round of Match Play

By Gary Phillips on Thursday, February 24th, 2011

When Tiger exited the woods on the first extra hole of the Accenture Match Play Tournament on Wednesday, he knew the nexthole he’d be playing would be in the opening round of next week’s Honda Classic. Woods lengthened his battle with Thomas Bjorn by sinking a clutch birdie putt on 18. But his 3 wood on the 19th hole of the day went awry, and the steady Bjorn took the deciding hole. “It’s easy to put the ball in the fairway, and I couldn’t even do that,” Woods said. No, he couldn’t. ...

I knew it was going to be magical when Dwayne Wade and LeBron James both ended up with the Miami Heat.  Although I don't think that the Heat will be giving the Lakers a run for their money any time soon, the video clip below showcases the absolute magic on the court that basketball fans are getting used to seeing. I know that the YouTube video below showing Dwayne Wade and LeBron James work their magic is short, but it's just that - magical.  I can't ...

Tonya Harding, best known for hiring someone to brutally attack fellow skater Nancy Kerrigan is expecting her first child.  And in case you were wondering, no she's not expecting a baby with the man who she conspired with to end Kerrigan's 1994 Olympics bid. They have since divorced, and it is her current husband with whom she's expecting a baby boy. After the Nancy Kerrigan scandal, Tonya Harding was forced to pull out of the championships and lost out any chance of making it to the Olympics. She was fined $160,000 ...

Super Bowl National Anthem Botched by Christina Aguilera, Half Time Show Bores

By Tyrese on Wednesday, February 9th, 2011

Christina Aguilera has had a rough year between her widely publicized divorce, her big-screen debut in Burlesque, and now she botched the National Anthem at the biggest game of the year - the Super Bowl.  Other than Kim Kardashian getting thrown offstage by Prince, I don't know what could be more embarrassing. Overall, the Super Bowl was a great game, and I'm not normally one to watch football.  The winner was decided during the last plays of the game, so the suspense was definitely there during the whole ordeal. What wasn't there ...

Plagiarism. It's something that the media always has to deal with. It gets many students kicked out of colleges, enrages authors, researchers, journalists, professors, editors, and other professionals who spend countless hours creating works of words. In an increasingly online era, plagiarism is even more rampant, with many major media sources, the Associated Press included, scrutinizing many bloggers who blog current events and news. However, you wouldn't expect the words "plagiarize" and "ESPN anchor" to be combined in the same sentence...unless it were to say that someone in the new media ...

Brett Favre fined $50,000 After Jenn Sterger Investigation

By Tyrese on Thursday, December 30th, 2010

Brett Favre was fined $50,000 after the Jenn Sterger investigation, but not because there was any wrongdoing that was uncovered but because Favre wasn't candid in his dealings with the NFL. The forensic expert hired to evaluate the claims made by Sterger that it was Favre who sent her lewd photos of himself during the 2008 season failed to find a concrete link to invalidate the claims that Favre made that he never sent the photos and that the two never met in person. However, Jenn Sterger's legal team still believes there's ...

It’s been a long wait; 251 days, to be exact. But live racing finally has returned to Santa Anita Park. Industry infighting and an unsafe racing surface doomed the annual Oak Tree at Santa Anita meeting this fall, but Sunday, all that was forgotten. Horsemen filled the entry box and fans filled the stands as Southern California’s premier race meeting got under way. More than 34,000 race-goers streamed through the turnstyles Sunday. For some, the lure was two Grade 1 races with deep, talented fields. But for most, it was a faint ...

Heat makes quick work of Lakers

By Gary Phillips on Sunday, December 26th, 2010

In a match-up that many believe could be a preview of the NBA championship in June, LeBron James and the Miami Heat came to Los Angeles on Saturday and ruined the Lakers’ Christmas. James had a triple-double to lead Miami to a 96-80 victory at Staples Center. The Heat led by six after one quarter and 11 at the half, and always seemed in control. Besides leading all scorers with 27 points, James dished out 10 assists and grabbed 11 rebounds in a dominating performance. ‘The ...

Vikings Game Postponed – Is it the Curse of Brett Favre?

By Gary Phillips on Sunday, December 26th, 2010

The Minnesota Vikings just can’t win. One year removed from an appearance in the NFC Championship game, the 5-9 Minnesota Vikings aren’t just having trouble on the playing field, they’re having trouble making it to the playing field. For the second time in three weeks, a Sunday game featuring Minnesota has been postponed. The first was Dec. 12, when a storm dumped more than a foot of snow on Minneapolis and collapsed the roof of the Metrodome, where the Vikings were scheduled to host the New York Giants. ...
